FAQ

Solar Panel Systems

How do solar panels work?

  • Solar panels convert sunlight into electricity using photovoltaic cells.

How much do solar panels cost?

  • The cost varies based on system size and type but typically ranges from £6,000 to £18,000.

How long do solar panels last?

  • Solar panels typically have a lifespan of 25-30 years.

Do solar panels work during cloudy weather?

  • Yes, they still produce electricity but at a reduced rate compared to sunny days.

What maintenance do solar panels require?

  • Solar panels require minimal maintenance, mainly regular cleaning and periodic inspections.

Battery Storage Solutions

What is battery storage and how does it work?

  • Battery storage systems store excess energy produced by your solar panels for later use.

How much does a battery storage system cost?

  • Costs range from £2,500 to £10,000 depending on the size and type of battery.

How long do battery storage systems last?

  • Most battery systems last between 10-15 years with proper maintenance.

Can I add battery storage to my existing solar system?

  • Yes, battery storage can be retrofitted to existing solar panel systems.

What are the benefits of battery storage?

  • Benefits include energy independence, backup power during outages, and maximised solar energy usage.

EV Charging Stations

What types of EV chargers are available?

  • There are Level 1 (standard outlet), Level 2 (dedicated circuit), and DC fast chargers.

How much does it cost to install an EV charger at home?

  • Installation costs range from £950 to £2,000 depending on the charger type and installation requirements.

How long does it take to charge an electric vehicle?

  • Charging times vary; Level 1 takes 8-12 hours, Level 2 takes 4-6 hours, and DC fast chargers can take under an hour.

Can I install an EV charger myself?

  • It's recommended to hire a certified electrician to ensure proper and safe installation.

Are there incentives for installing an EV charger?

  • Yes, there are government incentives and rebates available for EV charger installations.

Energy Efficiency and Savings

How can solar panels reduce my electricity bills?

  • Solar panels generate electricity from sunlight, reducing the amount of power you need to purchase from the grid.

What is net metering and how does it work?

  • Net metering allows you to send excess solar energy back to the grid in exchange for credits on your electricity bill.

What are the financial incentives for installing solar panels?

  • There are government incentives, tax credits, and rebates that can significantly reduce the cost of installation.

How long does it take for a solar system to pay for itself?

  • The payback period typically ranges from 6 to 9 years, depending on various factors like system size and local electricity rates.

What other ways can I improve my home's energy efficiency?

  • Upgrading insulation, using energy-efficient appliances, and implementing smart home technology can further reduce energy consumption and costs.

Installation and Maintenance

How long does it take to install a solar system?

  • Installation usually takes 1-3 days, but the entire process including permits can take several weeks.

What is involved in the solar panel installation process?

  • The process includes site assessment, design, permits, installation, and final inspection.

Do I need to prepare my home for solar panel installation?

  • Your installer will guide you, but generally, minimal preparation is needed aside from ensuring the roof is in good condition.

What happens if my solar panels are damaged?

  • Most solar panels come with warranties, and damages can often be repaired or replaced under these terms.

How often do solar panels need to be inspected?

  • It's recommended to have your solar panels inspected once a year to ensure they are functioning optimally.

How do I register for a tariff to get paid for the excess energy I send back to the grid?

  • You need to contact your energy provider and ask to sign up for their Smart Export Guarantee tariff (SEG). They will send you an application for you to fill out and also ask for some documents, an MCS Certificate, which is sent in your handover documentation, and a DNO notification approval, which is sent to you via email separately. You need a smart meter to be able to claim this tariff, so if you haven’t already got one, contact your supplier to get one installed

Who is responsible for registering my system with the National Grid?

  • Every Solar PV system needs to be registered with the national grid and local District Network Operator (DNO). As the solar installer, we are responsible for contacting and applying for grid approval on behalf of the homeowner. You may be required to sign a document to allow us to gain this permission on your behalf if your system size is over a certain threshold. Please bear in mind, it can take anywhere from 2 to 12 weeks to hear back from the DNO about a grid application.

When do I get my post installation certificates/documents?

  • We aim to get your documentation and certification to you within 14 working days of the settlement of the final invoice. This will include the necessary documentation to apply for a Smart Export Guarantee with your electricity provider.
